Ben and Ynaria are madly in love. He’s human, and she’s Matryoshkan, a race of beings with smaller people inside of them (like a Russian nesting doll). Before they can marry, they must undergo a tradition known as The Trial, where couples get locked in together and must meet and fall in love with each other’s inner layers—no matter how strange or monstrous they may be.
